The 4th of July is one of my very favorite holidays. Who doesn’t love a summer holiday that involves grilling, fun drinks, swimming, friends, family, and lots of our good ‘ol red, white, & blue?!? I also love a good tradition. A few years ago we thought it would be such a fun idea for my kids and their 5 cousins to tie dye shirts for the 4th of July and that it would be a tradition we could keep for years and years. We set up the tie dye materials, got our rally faces and cheerleader voices on, and let the kids begin their creative masterpiece. Sounds like an amazing time, right? Not exactly…the kids were spilling the dye, complaining excessively about the heat, and after 5 minutes, left to go swimming. Now I will be completely honest with you, there was like 80% of me that was okay with them leaving because I got to finish the shirts and make them nice and pretty (win!) That was 2 years ago and a failed tradition.

BUT I have a NEW tie dye tradition and it is completely kidproof, foolproof, whateverproof AND you make it inside with the air condition!!! That my friends is what you call a WINNER! We will definitely be making this cake every year.

I pressed the “easy button” with this cake and used boxed cake mix and store bought frosting. I like easy, don’t we all? Below are step by step pictures of this super fun process.

I followed the recipe on the back of the cake mix box. I also used 2 boxes.

Divide the mix into 3 separate bowls

Add the food coloring

Now let’s have some fun! After you have greased your round pans, start pouring the colors one at a time into the center of each other.

the colors will start to spread out as you pour

bake as directed

level the top of the cakes and keep the “scraps” for yourself the kiddos.

let your creative juices flow with the rest of the cake….there is no right and no wrong. HAVE FUN!

Drum rollllllllll………..

Nobody will ever guess that the inside of this cake is a party!

So fun! I really hope you have as much fun making this as we did.
Cheers to a new holiday tradition!
XOXO,
Danielle
Love it!!! I’ll definitely be trying this one out. But I still think the tie dye shirt/shorts tradition should make a comeback. 🤪
Beautiful cake! Clear instructions! Happy 4th of July!
Love it!!!!! 😍
